When a homeowner begins to consider
flooring options, carpet, laminate and hardwood floors are a few of the major options one selects from. Homeowners then consider the following questions to make informed decisions:
1. Will the cleaning process consume a lot of time?
2. Will I need to purchase specialty products to clean or maintain the flooring?
3. Where would the flooring in question be located, in a high or low traffic area?
4. Will that location be susceptible to oil, dirt, grease, mud, dust, moisture or any substance that could damage the flooring or its adhesives?
5. Will the flooring chosen be kid-proof?
One of the biggest considerations when it comes to flooring options are the addition or subtraction (as we like to call it) or kids. Will the flooring be spill-proof? Can the kids fall or crawl on it without hurting themselves? Will the installation assure that no detachments occur? Will the carpet absorb shock?
In this day and time, wall-to-wall
carpeting options are seen less in residential spaces despite the soft and comfortable feel and its ability to decrease noise. More consumers are switching to a variety of
tile, wood and stone as a source of flooring options for their home.
As we move forward toward a greener, cleaner environment the nature and scope of flooring, cleaning products and our health has changed in recent years. Many consumers are moving toward environmentally safe products and supplies not only for their homes and families but in their everyday commute and choices. A flooring specialist should have a variety of products and services available to meet any customers, regardless if it falls between
green flooring and or green products.
Many of our customers have inquired on the
effectiveness and durability of green flooring that we offer. We inform customers that green carpets are constructed to be free from formaldehydes, volatile organic compounds and other toxic chemicals other carpets are exposed to.
Key items to consider when selecting carpets for your home are ones that contain natural-fiber backing and less-toxic adhesives.
Carpet backing that has been constructed with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), synthetic SB latex or polyurethane contains artificial petroleum based products. Those products can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions (which emit and absorb radiation) that can be released into your home and become hazardous to your families’ health. Adhesives are known to produce what many people call "the-new-carpet-smell" along with other additives such as flame retardants, stain protectors, and mothproofing. That new-carpet-smell originates from a formula called 4-PC which is used in 95% of carpets produced in the United States. 4-PC has been linked to a number of upper respiratory, eye and nose complications in homes that have new carpets installed.
Make the choice today to free yourself and your loved ones by refraining from having carpets installed that contain these harmful, toxic chemicals. Ask your flooring specialist about the chemicals contained in their installation products as well as the carpet to be installed. Your health and that of your loved ones is worth it!
